Her impressive solo career includes collaborations and performances with Tony Kushner, Itzhak Perlman, Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and many others. Alicia has appeared on David Letterman, MTV, Good Morning America, PBS' Great Performances, and NPR's Prairie Home Companion, Weekend Edition and New Sounds, and the critics have raved: "stunningly gifted" "brilliant fiddling" "dazzling virtuosity" "without question the greatest living exponent of the klezmer fiddle."

Vance Gilbert
w/ Special Guest All About Buford
Singer/ Songwriter
7:30pm

Sponsored by:

Admission $15

"When songwriter Vance Gilbert exploded on the Boston scene, the boom was heard all over New England. News of this bold, infectious performer spread like prairie fire. No local acoustic performer in recent memory - not Tracy Chapman, not The Story, not Dar Williams - has gotten hot faster than Gilbert... His catchy, pop-friendly melodies support keenly crafted, hard-hitting lyrics. His guitar is supple, his milk-warm tenor honest and gently acrobatic... He does not duck hard truths and never succumbs to the temptation to tie his points up in neat platitudes or truisms. He writes powerfully and uncompromisingly about the wrenching separation suffered by single parents, the tug between love's desires and its demands and the bitterness of being nonwhite in this Euro-centric culture... Gilbert has earned an unusually deep affection and loyalty from his fans. He is that rare performer for whom people lean forward in their seats as eagerly between songs as they do during them. These 'Vance-heads' see him over and over again, always expecting to be surprised, never being disappointed."

Barbara Sfraga
Jazz Vocalist
8pm

Admission $15
Vocalist Barbara Sfraga has tracked one of the most captivating jazz albums of the year with Under the Moon . Her vocal work is consistantly inventive and sure, and she demonstrates a distinctive feel for how to unlock a song in a new way. ...Sfraga's debut for A440 is a major-league jazz record. --Philip van Vleck, BILLBOARD (CRITIC'S CHOICE)

She wraps her voice around and inside a song, interpreting it like an instrumentalist, soaring, but never treating it like a mere vehicle, never losing respect for the song. About Sfraga's repertoire: She holds songwriters Duke Ellington (an affecting Mood Indigo, best version you'll hear this year) and Bob Dylan (a luminous Every Grain of Sand , with just voice and acoustic bass) in equal esteem. If a mad gene-splicer could cross kd lang with Sheila Jordan, the result might be Barbara Sfraga. --Mark Keresman, San Francisco Weekly

August 13

janah

8pm

Admission $12

Despite the band member's individual dedication and experience, Janah's sound is, in essence, the musical memoirs of Keith Johnston, a song writing visionary, composer, and lyricist who's desire to find a new voice took him from the predictable streets of Atlanta, to the shores of Israel and beyond, ultimately giving his songs an authentic world quality no amount of cunning, second-hand, desk-top ingenuity could achieve. His eclectic compositions combine experience, appreciation for cultural distinctions, melodic sensibility, and a lust for adventure, discovery and epiphany.
Janah's new album, "Swan In The Monsoon" released in November 2003, is brimming with the same bold spirit of imagination, damning the status quo, while fostering unusual mass appeal. It has contagious melodies, lush, powerful orchestration, meaningful lyrics, and a feast of rock-solid percussion burnished in by hundreds of live shows. Instead of struggling to live up to their studio work, as many bands do, Janah continually comes alive on stage with wild energy and great detail, leaving a reoccurring theme in the letters of multiplying fans: "When are you coming back?"

Admission $20 Advance/ $25 Day of

Satalla presents a historic evening with three masters of the drum - BOBBY SANABRIA, CANDIDO and PATATO in an evening of Afro-Cuban jazz that will span the past, present and future of the Afro-Cuban jazz continuum.

BOBBY SANABRIA - One of the most passionate and articulate exponents of Afro-Cuban jazz today, drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, producer, educator, two time Grammy nominee and native Nuyorican Bobby Sanabria is renowned for being equally adept at the swinging big band sounds of drummers Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson along with other boyhood hero's, fusion pioneer Billy Cobham and timbale titan Tito Puente. Having performed and recorded with jazz and Latin music royalty such as Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Marco Rizo, Chico O'Farill, Mario Bauzá and many others, his three critically acclaimed Cd's, "NYC Aché, Afro-Cuban Dream - Live & In Clave!!!" and the recent, "Quarteto Aché" showcase his versatility from small group, octet to big band and garnered a Grammy nomination for the aforementioned "Live & In Clave!!!" in 2001.

For this special evening Bobby brings to Satalla his virtuosic foursome, Quarteto Aché, which means "Power" in the West African, Yoruba language. Described by Modern Drummer Magazine as "... equal parts fire and grace" the quartet features Jay Collins on tenor, soprano, flutes and vocals, Daniel Kelly on piano and vocals, Andy Eulau on acoustic bass and Bobby on drums and vocals.

CANDIDO - Hailed by Downbeat magazine as the most "...influential conga drummer to come to the USA since the legendary Chano Pozo", 83 year old Candido Camero is a true legend in jazz and Afro-Cuban music. Starting his early career as a bassist, tres player (the mandolin of Cuba) Candido learned also how to play bongó at the young age of three in Havana. Establishing himself in the 1930's as a teenager with some of Cuba's most well known "son" (folk song) groups such as Arsenio Rodriguez's Conjunto, Chano Pozo's Conjunto Azul and many others, his boyhood friends were fellow legendary percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Armando Peraza. He then began to work as a studio and show musician at Cuba's biggest radio stations and at the famed Tropicana in Havana.

Since coming to the States in 1946 with the Cuban dance team of Carmen and Rolando, Candido has astounded audiences with his unique melodic style of multiple conga drumming. He is acknowledged as the first to develop the ability to play multiple conga drums, being the first to utilize two, three and more drums played simultaneously by one player. Since these early innovations, Candi' has performed and recorded with every major artist in both the fields of Latin and jazz including Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, Tito Puente, Machito, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey and others too numerous to mention as well as appearing on numerous TV shows. His latest release "Candido and Graciela" teams him up with the legendary Cuban vocalist, Graciela, is available on the Chesky label. A biography on his life, directed and produced by filmmaker Ivan Acosta, will be premiered in the fall at Jazz at Lincoln Center this year.

CARLOS "PATATO" VALDES - Born in 1925 and Nicknamed "Patato" (the Yoruba word for tiny) by his boyhood friends in Havana Cuba, Patato is a giant in the history of Afro-Cuban percussion. As a youngster in his barrio in "La Habana", Los Sitios, he first played a wooden box as a drum in the rumba style known as Yambú, danced and also learned the art of the Cuban mandolin, the tres as well as the acoustic bass. Known for his quick, wit, sense of humor, stylish dress and inventiveness, Patato made history in the late 1940's by being the first conguero to play two drums simultaneously in a conjunto (small group with brass)setting with the famed Conjunto Casino in Havana. Since coming to the States in 1950, the man with the signature Kangol hat and stylish dress has been a major force in jazz and Latino circles recording and performing with a who's who including Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Tito Puente, Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann and many others as well as appearing on film teaching Bridgette Bardot the cha-cha-cha in the 60's cult classic "And God Created Women". His solo records have become collector's items and his "Ritmo, Candela y Sabor" was nominated for a Grammy in the mid 90's. A move to Rio de Janeiro in his teen years presented Marco with the first real opportunities for serious musical study. He studied classical guitar privately with Luis Antonio Perez, a well-known Rio teacher, and later enrolled at the prestigious Pro Arte Music Conservatory. There, he studied classical guitar with Léo Soares and popular guitar with Henrique Lissovsky. During this time Marco also studied voice privately with Heloisa Madeira, and sang in the Pro Arte choir, whose eclectic repertoire ranged from Beethoven to Villa Lobos to Jobim. Throughout this period, Marco continued to explore his passion for the music of Brazil's most beloved popular artists, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and Joyce. Inspired by these musical heroes, Marco began composing his own songs.
